Garmin GPSMAP 496 vs. Garmin GPSMAP 396

I have gotten the above answer asked about a million times and have answered it aboGarmin GPSMAP 496ut a million times. “What is the difference between the GPSMAP 496 and the GPSMAP 396?†Just today I thought that hey maybe its a good idea to write up the differences on the site to clear up any confusion anyone may have. I consider both GPS units as top notch aviation units. You really cant go wrong with either one.

Does a touch screen gps or for that fact any touch screen belong in a Aircraft?

I have been involved with aircraft and avionics for many years. It just so happend that right when i got involved withIQu33600A avionics the latest and greatest were the new “handheld aviation gps’s”. One of the things many people have problems with the unit is how to operate them.
Many pilots say that “the same button does a million different things, its too confusing!” Of those people many think that its crazy not to have a touch screen as the user interface rather than a bunch of buttons that seemly do some many different things.

My question to you is: Does a touch screen gps seem more of a advantage or a disadvantage and for that matter does a touch screen anything belong in a Aircraft?
